Variable area meters, also known as rotameters, are available in a wide variety of sizes, shapes, materials, etc., and are mainly used to indicate rate of flow only. At Controls Warehouse, we distribute high quality variable area meters from the top manufacturers in this field, such as King Instrument Company, Blue White® Industries, Ltd. and Badger Meter (Hedland® brand). These units are typically required to mount in a vertical orientation unless the meter has an internal spring to compress the float. The standard unit has a weighted float that rises in a tapered tube as the flow rate increases; the float stops rising when the area between the float and tube is large enough that the weight of the float is balanced by the drag of the fluid flow. Variable area meters do not have high accuracies like most other flow meter types and are only used in the applications where precision flow is not required.
